A working key is a small thing until you're the person without one. Then it affects the shopping in the trunk, the shop waiting to open or the evening you thought you had free. At Whitby Locksmiths, we've been in the locksmith business for about 20 years. We know the lock is only one part of what you need sorted out.
The quoted accounts below are fictional examples, not reviews from real customers. They illustrate different situations and the details worth considering when arranging locksmith work.
"We had a little pile of keys on the kitchen counter and no idea how many other copies were out there. I thought changing the locks meant buying all new handles. Whitby Locksmiths checked the existing locks and rekeyed the suitable ones. We kept the hardware we liked and started with our own set of keys. One less thing on the moving list".
That distinction matters. A lock can be in good condition while the keys need changing. Rekeying a suitable lock changes which key operates it; replacement gives you new hardware. There may be a reason to do one entrance differently from another.
Before a visit, take a quick look at the doors you actually use. The side entrance might see more traffic than the front door, and the garage key can be easy to forget when everything is in boxes.
Some automotive calls are about getting through a locked door. Others need a replacement key, programming or attention to the ignition. Knowing which problem you have helps us work out the right service before arranging the visit.
"There was my bag on the passenger seat at Whitby GO, with the keys right beside it. I could point to them, which wasn't much use. The useful part was sorting out exactly where the car was parked. Once the door was open, I had my own key back and could carry on. I hadn't lost it after all. Just access to it".
For a car lockout, the parking area and a nearby entrance help with finding the vehicle. A station name alone can leave quite a bit of ground to cover. Whitby Locksmiths provides a mobile car unlocking service, with availability and arrival estimates discussed when you call.
If the key is missing altogether, the conversation changes. We need the vehicle's make, model and year to assess replacement options for supported vehicles. Getting the door open and getting the car started are separate things.
"We'd managed with one car key for months. Managed is probably generous. One of us would leave for work in Ajax and the other would realise the key was in the wrong coat pocket. Having a working spare meant we could stop arranging our mornings around handing over a key".
A spare is an ordinary convenience, and that's reason enough to ask about one. It doesn't have to follow an emergency.
With an electronic car key, the finished result needs to do the jobs you expect. Door buttons, starting the vehicle and any separate key blade should all be considered when discussing the replacement. We can check the requirements for your particular vehicle before you buy a fob or book programming.
"Changing the shop lock sounded straightforward until we counted who needed a key. There was the person opening the next morning, the cleaner and the landlord to consider. The key arrangements were part of planning the work. The new lock was only useful if the right people could still get in".
A business entrance belongs to several people's routines. Work on one lock can affect a cleaner arriving after closing or someone making an early delivery. That is why an existing master key arrangement or shared entrance needs to come into the discussion.
Whitby Locksmiths handles commercial lock repairs, rekeying and replacement, along with suitable master key and access control systems. The choice depends on the door and who needs to use it. A small office does not automatically need the same arrangement as a building with several tenants.
"We had a particular way of locking the back door: pull it towards you, lift the handle a little and try again. It had become so normal that we forgot to explain it to visitors. What we wanted was fairly simple - a door that locked without a demonstration".
That is a useful description of a fault. You do not need to name the part that is causing it.
The lock, door alignment and fittings all deserve a look before a replacement is chosen. Sometimes a repair is appropriate; sometimes worn or damaged hardware needs changing. Describe how the door behaves, including whether the problem comes and goes. It gives us more to investigate than "the lock is old".
Perhaps you want to keep the existing handles. Perhaps a working spare is the whole job. Or the priority is getting a damaged entrance secured so you can leave the property. There is room to be specific about what you want done.
A few questions can help settle the details:
We welcome questions about the work. A clear explanation is useful whether you are arranging an urgent lockout visit or thinking about a lock change for next month.
If Whitby Locksmiths has already helped you, we would welcome your own feedback. What needed doing? Was the explanation clear? How has the lock or key been working since? A short account in your own words is useful, including anything that could have gone better. Please leave out private details such as access codes or your full home address.
